Investigating
the Farish Military Recreation Area
8 September 2021
Decided to do something fun & different today! Headed out with Dave & Micky about 10am to visit the Farish Military Recreation Area. We could hike there from the base in 8 miles...but to get there by car, it's 45 miles!!! Took about an hour.
You have to check in at the office as you enter & only military (active or retired) & their guests are allowed. It was a $7 for our car load for the day. They also rent cabins, RV spaces, & tent areas. The receptionist gave us a couple of maps & gave us an overview of the property. First we drove around the area to see the cabins & the 3 lakes.
Besides just getting out for the day, I had read that there were several hikes around the area. We were planning on the 4+ mile hike & she gave us a map that showed the route (it is in pink). It only took an hour, so then we added in the smaller loop to the ridge (it is in green) and although much shorter, it had a bit of elevation gain & took about a half hour.
Start of the second hike. It was more in the trees.

Interesting shelters - we saw 2 of them. |
|
Clark's Nutcracker - there were several of them in the area. Lovely bird. This was the first one I've seen!

Really interesting rock formations! |
|
Dead falcon??? |

George will look into how to buy this place for me! |

Little Chipmunk came out to say bye to us! |
After our lovely hike at the Farish Recreation Area, we headed to Fat Sully's Pizza on Tejon in Colorado Springs to meet Rich & Georgianne for Slupper (it was 2pm between Lunch & Supper!).
I forgot to get any pictures inside the restaurant, but it was the best pizza we've had in a long long time! Bought it by the slice (the full size pizza was 26"!!!!) and even the slices were HUGE - at least 13" long & covered the plates. Allowed 5 toppings & you could choose for each slice. I had jalapeno, pepperoni, onion & green pepper. Very thin crust & just totally yummy. Had a local amber beer on tap. Perfect end of the day & it was only mid day! Made it home for a nap!
