Route of the Maya Oat Trip, Dec 2023 - #5 - Copan Ruinas to Guatemala City

Route of the Maya Oat Trip

Travel to Guatemala City, Guatemala

13 Dec 2023 - Long Travel Day

Up at 5:55am.  George about 20 minutes later, after I was out of the shower, but before the alarm went off.  Luggage out by 7am & down for breakfast a few minutes later.  Had eggs, tortilla, banana, beans & some farmers cheese.  Very good.  Up to look at the upper patio one more time.  Didn’t hear or see anything new.  Pottied & down to board bus about 7:45am.  On the road shortly after.  Found out that Bob had forgotten about his passport & left it in his suitcases that Hector had strapped down on top of the bus.  While we were at the border doing our passports, which was extremely quick & easy – no one else here. Hector had to get his suitcases down & Bob couldn’t even remember which one it was in, got small one down & so it ended up being the big one.  Poor Hector & Walter.  You could tell that both were upset, but tried not to be.  Walter said it did usually happen once every trip!  Crazy!!

The drive was uneventful.  Walter talked for a bit during the first part before lunch.  Mostly about Guatamala, but Bob asked for more info on Honduras too.  I was fighting staying awake.  Bottom line is that as usual the US had stuck their noses in & helped one of the leaders who ended up pretty much trying for genecide of the natives.  Recent issues are because the guy that won this election is backed by UN & US, but the Federal Judicial system of Guatemala is trying for a coo.  Fairly quiet right now thank goodness.

Stopped for lunch at a fast food place  Walter had pre ordered for us.  Quite a variety offered.  George & I both had Thai pasta with grilled chicken.  It was very good.  Came with Garlic toast too.  Others had a pizza, fajitas.  Most had ice cream from the shop next door, but we didn’t.

Back on the bus, it was very hard to stay awake.  As we started up into the mountains, I gave up & went to sleep.  Slept for almost an hour.  Worked on Spelling Bee & got Queen Bee on today, yesterday, & on of last week’s that I had missed.  Still have one more to catch up on.  Maybe tonight!

Less traffic than usual, so we arrived at the Clarion Hotel about 3:15pm.  Easily checked in.  Nice room – I guess all in the hotel are suites.  We are on the 5th floor with a few others.  Some all the way up on the 15th.  Satisfied with the room though.  Had to call for help with the safe and also found there is no ice machine, you have to call for it which I did & they brought it before it was time to go down stairs to meet Walter for our orientation walk.

Down at 4:30p and took a walk around the block of the hotel.  There is a shopping mall just down the street – very upscale with lots of good restaurants.  Wandered through it while he mentioned suggestions of where to go.  Then on around the block.  Ended at a really nice bakery.  Started to buy wine there, but I suggested we go back to a grocery store we had noticed on the way to the mall, so we walked back.  Choose a Chilean Bottle of Carmenere that was half the price of the bakery.  Hope it’s good!  Bought a bag of tortilla chips in case we get puckish.

Got our welcome drink in the bar – only choices were sangria or daiquiri.  Took the daiquiri – not frozen, on the ice and it was sweet, but tasty.

Ran into Walter as we were heading up.  He said he would stop at a bigger store on the way to Antiqua on Thursday so we’d have a better selection.

On up to the room to catch up on the journal.  Reset my finger print sign in on my laptop.  Should be interesting to see if it works!

Get to sleep in a half hour in the morning – not leaving until 8:30am!  Yeah!  Both of us piddled on computers & watched NCIS.  George came up with the idea of us each wearing an ear bud so we can hear better & not have to have the volume up.  Works great.
